크래시가 그래피티를 처음 접한 1970년대 미국 사회는 수많은 사회적 정치적 경제적 사건들로 가득한 역동적인 시대였다. 특히 그가 태어나고 자란 뉴욕의 사우스 브롱스 지역은 중산층과 노동자계급의 주거지역으로 그 혼란을 정면으로 마주하고 있었다. 크래쉬는 그의 나이 13세때 처음으로 브롱스의 여느 10대들처럼 친구들과 어울려 기차에 스프레이로 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 당시 그래피티 태깅(tagging: 스프레이나 마커로 자신의 사인을 하는 행위)이 경쟁적으로 성행하였는데 특히 순환하는 지하철 등에 태깅함으로 자신의 이름이 뉴욕 전체에 드러나는 것을 청소년들은 즐겼다. 크래쉬는 실수로 학교에서 컴퓨터를 떨어뜨린 후 "CRASH"라는 이름을 사용하게 되었고, 이후 크래쉬라는 이름은 뉴욕시 전체에 걸쳐 볼 수 있게 되었다.
70년대 중반부터 태깅 이상으로 그래피티는 발전하기 시작했는데, 70년대 말에 이르러서 일러스트레이션, 풍경, 만화캐릭터 등의 새로운 요소들이 추가되어 새롭고 다양한 작품 스타일이 등장하기 시작했다. 그래피티가 뉴욕의 워싱턴 하이츠와 브롱스를 주축으로 퍼지게 되면서 예술로서 인정받기 시작했다. 당시 크래쉬 역시 이미 뉴욕 도시 전역에 걸쳐 그만의 대담하고 거친 시그니쳐 그래피티를 선보인다는 평을 받기 시작했다.
1980년대 들어 본격적으로 뉴욕 아트씬에서 크래쉬에 대한 관심이 커졌고, 절친한 친구였던 키스 해링의 권유로 거리에서만 볼 수 있던 크래쉬의 작품을 캔버스에서도 볼 수 있게 된다. 당시 키스 해링 등 당대의 여러 아티스트들과 함께 콜라보레이션 작업을 진행하는 등 그는 뉴욕 그래피티 아트씬의 중심에서 활동하였다. 그가 기차에서 갤러리로 무대를 바꾸기 시작한 시점인 1980년대 초반, 그의 커리어에 있어서 중요한 터닝포인트가 찾아온다. 1980년 당시 19살의 크래쉬는 사우스 브롱스네 위치한 대안예술공간인 Fashion MODA 박물관에서 기념비적인 전시가 된 전을 기획하게 되는데 본 전시는 그래피티 작가들에게 갤러리의 외벽에 직접 그림을 그리도록 허락된 최초의 전시 중 하나였다. 이를 계기로 크래쉬는 스트리트 아티스트와 순수미술 세계를 연결 짓는 그래피티 아트의 새로운 가능성을 연 선구자로 서게 된다.
크래쉬의 작품은 벽화와 실크 스크린 프린트화의 형식에 앤디 워홀(Andy Warhol)과 로이 리히텐슈타인(Roy Lichtenstein)같은 팝 아트 등에서 영감을 받아 에너지 넘치고 다채로운 색감에 대중문화 등을 차용한 디자인으로 유명하다. 이러한 그의 작품은 "거리의 삶과 안정화된 사회 간에 시각적인 연결 고리"를 제공한다고 평가 받는다.
그의 작품은 브루클린 박물관(Brooklyn Museum), 보카 레이튼 미술관(the Boca Raton Museum of Art), 뉴올리언스 미술관(the New Orleans Museum of Art), 암스테르담의 스테델릭 박물관(the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam )에 영구 소장되어 있다. 그는 Absolut Vodka, Fender Guitars, SoBella Handbags, Levi's, 그리고 가장 최근에는 Tumi 캐리어 및 Morphik, Supreme과 기업들과 파트너 관계를 맺으며 프로젝트를 진행하였고, 현재에도 활발히 활동 중이며 전시 역시 국제적으로 활발히 개최되고 있다.
